When the brain does not receive enough blood supply, a person will lose consciousness, otherwise known as “fainting”. This occurrence is brief, and although this might not link to any medical significance, fainting should still be treated as a medical emergency until the signs and symptoms are relieved. We don’t have to be licensed physicians to know how to respond to someone’s fainting.
You don’t always have the time or the luxury to be able to access a walk-in clinic in California, so here are some steps that you must take in order to take care of a person who’s fainted:
- Position the person on their back. If they are not injured and are still breathing, elevate their legs. Loosen any constrictive clothing items such as belts, collars, and pants.
- Check for breathing. If the person is not breathing, perform CPR immediately and call 911. Continue CPR until the ambulance arrives or until the person starts breathing.
- If the person is injured in any way, make sure to treat the injury appropriately. Apply pressure on bleeding wounds, put ice on bruises, clean wounds, and etc.
