The Importance of COVID-19 Testing

When a communicable disease outbreak occurs, the ideal response is to begin testing for it right away. Testing leads to the identification of cases and subsequently, treatment to prevent the further spread of disease. With COVID, several tests are available and all with a different purpose. Hence, COVID testing in Montclair, California, and other parts of the country remain critical.

The antigen test is considered the first line of defense test against the virus, especially for individuals that are exhibiting COVID symptoms. This type of test is essential in detecting the presence of a specific viral antigen to determine viral infection. Also referred to as a rapid antigen detection test, it is most suitable as point-of-care testing for patients.

During an infection, a PCR test in California is recommended. This is performed by taking swab samples from the nose or throat even before symptoms of an illness first appear. For this reason, some individuals can be infectious for several days before the onset of symptoms that usually appear about five days after the initial infection.

Meanwhile, the antibody test is used to detect infections after the immune system has produced antibodies that help recognize the virus. This type of testing is effective in reporting past infection and immunity in individuals. That is why it is often used for studying past infections in whole populations. This information helps assess the scale and spread of an outbreak.
