The RICE Method of Treating Sprains, Fractures, and Strains

Injuries involving the joints, muscles, and bones are pretty common. Although some of the cases are minor, there could also be major fractures, strains, and sprains that are major and call for urgent care in Montclair, California.

Many of these major cases happen during sports and at work. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that these injuries are among the leading causes of job restrictions, lost work time, and transfer. Visiting a walk-in clinic in California is a must to mitigate the signs of sprains, strains, and fractures. Whether these injuries happen at work or home, experts recommend the R.I.C.E. method as an effective first aid response.

The R.I.C.E. Method

The RICE method is among the life-saving first aid skills everyone should learn. This is an acronym that stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate.

  • R – Stop doing the activity that’s causing the soreness or pain. Then, protect the affected area with a splint.
  • I – Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the swollen or sore area at least 3 times per day within 2 to 3 days. Once the swelling had subsided, apply a heat pack to the affected area.
  • C – Wrap the affected area with an elastic bandage to reduce the swelling. If the soreness or swelling is still there after 48 to 72 hours, be sure to talk to a doctor.
  • E – Especially when lying down or sitting, raise the affected area, ideally above your heart’s level. Doing this could help reduce the swelling.

Fractures, strains, and sprains could lead to a more serious health problem if not attended immediately. If the pain or swelling persists longer than 2 days, it’s time to visit Above Urgent Care Center for a checkup, lab test, or consultation with physicians.
